Preparing for Vacations

I had a client joke once that he should take vacations every week because just before he left, he'd work in a flurry of activity to get everything done. And when he came back, he was more rested and got more done. Now he was joking, yet there's some truth to this. Many miss out on the productivity boost from vacation. Sometimes your career presents limitations but often people are afraid vacations will make them less productive. The opposite is true. If you follow a few best practices, first, block out vacation time well in advance, months or even a year ahead of time. Many miss out on a vacation because they procrastinate planning it. They tell themselves, I've got to take a break sometime in the next three months, but there isn't a specific commitment. Block out the time and protect it. Suggestion two, move processing. So if you've taken my time management course you'll know that I recommend spending five hours a week on processing. This is the time you'll decide what, when and where for every task on your schedule.

If your vacation makes you miss processing time, move the time you missed and increase your processing time after you get back. So you may have several extra hours of processing when you return. My third suggestion is to schedule power down and power up time, add a day or two of buffer before you leave and after you return, you'll feel less rushed before you leave. So you enjoy your vacation and feel that you have time to catch up when you return. Finally, take a gathering point with with you on your vacation. A paper notepad or notepad app on your phone is usually enough. When you're on your vacation, your mind is freer and more relaxed. So creative ideas to help with work may come to mind. Use your gathering point to capture the idea and then forget about it. So you return to enjoying your vacation. When you return to work, assess the value of each idea during your extra processing time. Is your next vacation on your schedule? Use these suggestions to feel more balanced and rested when you return.
